When I was about 11 years old, I got in trouble at my grandma's house and was heavily scolded by Uncle TK. On that day, I was wearing an "ofoes" t-shirt(second hand t-shirt) with the inscription, "Our life's work is life itself." -St. Luke Presbyterian University Hospital
For my punishment, my uncle asked me to tell him what that meant, or I would receive the true "African Household Punishment " of those times(if you know, you know!đ) I wasn't able to do so, welp!!
Fast forward... to Loyola, where I learned that I was to "Go forth and set the world on fire!" That it was my duty to use my talents, skills, gifts and opportunities given by God in the world through service and love.
Then, later, as a first year teacher, I had to think of what drove me to my career of choice. So, I had to think of myself, my life experiences, my educational experiences, and what I've gained from it. This quote by John Dewey spoke volumes to me "Education is not a preparation for life, education is life itself. "
Then it came to finding a church home, where I found First Church of Lombard, where they don't just speak of service, but live every day through "AGAPE in Action." I'm doing it because it's my duty, without questions or judgment.
Then finally, now a member of a organization that genuinely believes in service, lives and breathes service, founded by educators, and tirelessly work to enhance the lives of women and their families in the US and around the world. "Greater Service, Greater Progress "đđđ©
Flash back to age 11, I might not have known the meaning of "Our life's work is life itself" then, but I can genuinely say that I'm living it. I want to make sure that whatever I do in my life enhances someone else's.
Happy Teacher Appreciation and Happy Nurses Week to all the amazing teachers and nurses (including my baby sister, picture below) who work tirelessly to enhance the lives of others to save lives. You brighten the corners you're in and bring light to the world. You set the world on fire, and your life's work is life itself. Thank you!đ«¶đż
